The female condom!

Female CondomYou have heard about the female condom, have you? It goes under several names as Femidom, MyFemy, Femy or just plain Female Condom. This isn’t a new thing. Actually it was invented by a danish guy in 1988!

The female condom is equal in length as a male condom but it is larger and wider.
From the instructions it’s said that it should be put in as a condom, basically. So the inner ring should be pushed just past the pubic bone. The outer ring needs to be held in place during the intercourse (!), but it’s said that it can give some pleasure. I somehow have a hard time to believe that.

The producers of the female condom can only guarantee that it is 79-95% effective. And, not to forget, it is sometimes three times as expensive as a male condom (you can however find cheaper ones at ie Ebay).

A couple of…

Pros

  • Woman-controlled method
  • Does not reduce a male partner’s stimulation (can be discussed)
  • Are stronger than latex male condoms
  • Do not interrupt sexual activity since they can be inserted ahead of time
  • Erection not necessary to keep condom in place
  • Offers greater protection (covers both internal and external genitalia)
  • Can be used by people who are allergic to latex condoms

and Cons

  • Can make a noise during intercourse (”crackling and popping noises” eek!)
  • Noticeable during sex
  • Expensive
  • Difficult to insert/remove
  • Does not contain spermicide
  • Can break or leak
  • It may slip into the vagina during intercourse
  • It is not as effective against the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases as male condoms

Conclusion?
I haven’t tried it personally but after this, I’d say: Stick to the male condoms!

Have you/your partner tried the female condom? Answer the poll!
